Each rack system has characteristics which make them better selections for specific industries or operating conditions.

Selective Racks

Selective racking is a versatile and flexible storage option, used when direct access to every pallet is needed. It is not the most dense way to store but it gives you the most access to all of your inventory hence the name “Selective”.

There a two main types of selective pallet racking. There is cold rolled “roll formed” type which is the most common, and there is hot formed “structural” racking which is commonly seen in very high capacity applications and in freezers.

Benefits:

Drawbacks:

  • Not very dense storage

Cantilever Racks

Cantilever Racks are ideal for storing wide or over sized products that will not fit in selective pallet racks. The structure is designed so the front of the rack does not have a column. Cantilever rack is available in roll formed (lighter duty) and structural design (heavy duty) which is constructed of I-Beams. Can be configured as single sided or double sided.

Drive-In/Drive-Thru Racks

Reduce square footage requirements with this high density storage system. Drive in and Drive thru racks are optimal for large inventories of relatively few sku’s. The system can be made out of roll formed (more economical) or structural (less susceptible to damage) steel. Drive in racking in a LIFO System, where it is unloaded an loaded from the same side. However Drive through rack is a FIFO system, where it is loaded on one side and unloaded on another side.

Benefits:

  • Deep lane storage reduces square footage requirements
  • Eliminate multiple access aisles
  • High volume
  • Great for freezer storage
  • Customized for your inventory

Drawbacks:

  • Less selectivity to individual pallets
  • Less flexibility. Cannot change size and weights of pallets

Pallet Flow Racks

Pallet Flow Rack is designed to be a high density first in first out (FIFO) system. Pallets are loaded in on one side and effortlessly flow to the other side. There is no depth restriction on this system making this system extremely versatile.

There are several different types of rollers styles that are dictated by your pallet. Primarily, what type of pallet you are trying to flow (wood or plastic) and the bottom boards that will come into contact with the rollers. Pallet Flow is available in for freezers with a special kind of wheel that will not crack under cold temperatures.

Benefits:

  • Optimal for expiry material
  • High density eliminates extra aisles
  • Space Savings

Drawbacks:

  • Material can get stuck in rollers causing delays in efficiency
  • Less flexibilty going forward. Have to maintain the specs the system is designed for

Pushback Racks

Pushback Racking is ideal for last in first out (LIFO) high density storage. Nesting carriages inside this structure allow you to store pallets 5-6 deep. It is ideal to store all of the same sku’s in the same lane. Since the forklift never goes inside this system, it is less susceptible to damage. As the system is loaded, each pallet you put in pushes the pallets in that lane back in the system.

Benefits:

  • Good combination of selectivity and efficient use of space
  • Resistant to damage
  • Reduces wasted aisle space

 

Drawbacks:

  • Not good for products that have expiration dates
  • Less flexibility with sizes and weights moving forward

Carton Flow Rack

Varying Carton Widths

Full Bed Carton flow is made for change. If your inventory is made of different shapes and sized and subject to change in the future, then full bed carton flow is for you. It is made with staggered polypropylene wheels, available in 1″, 2″, and 3″ centers depending on the size and weight of the material that you are flowing. There are several different types of accessories including impact trays, tilt trays, lane guides and dividers.

Consistent Carton Widths

Full width Roller Carton Flow is ideal for cartons or totes of consistent size. It is galvanized and easily drops in to pallet rack. It is durable for heavy loads and the full carton coverage is often what is needed for lightweight applications. It is important to know the sizes and weights of all boxes to ensure they flow properly.

Double Deep Rack

A Double Deep Pallet Rack System is achieved by placing two rows of selective rack back to back and using a deep reach lift truck. This provides access to two pallets from one side of the aisle. The main advantage of a double deep system is the ability to save space due to fewer access aisles.

Benefits:

  • High Density Storage
  • Good Combination of Selectivity and efficient use of space
  • No moving parts in the system means fewer shutdowns

Drawbacks:

  • Less selectivity
  • Must have deep reach truck
